Pet Allergies (Part 2): Relief at Home
Once your pet starts itching, licking, or losing fur, it’s natural to want to help right away—and in many cases, you can! There are a few safe and effective things pet owners can try at home to ease allergy symptoms before (or alongside) veterinary care.
Start with bathing. A gentle, fragrance-free shampoo or a vet-recommended medicated cleanser can help wash away allergens like pollen, dust, or mold from your pet’s skin and coat. Regular bathing, especially during allergy season, can make a noticeable difference in comfort.
Omega-3 fatty acid supplements are another helpful tool. These supplements, found in fish oils, have anti-inflammatory properties that support healthy skin and reduce itchiness. Not all supplements are created equal, so we’re happy to help you choose one that’s both effective and safe.
Antihistamines like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can sometimes reduce mild allergy symptoms, but they don’t work for every pet and aren’t appropriate in every situation. Always consult with us about proper dosing and whether it’s a good fit for your pet.
While these at-home options can help, they’re not always enough—especially in moderate to severe cases. That brings us to Part 3 of our allergy series: why it’s so important to act quickly when your pet is having a flare-up.
