Finding Relief:

Regenerative Medicine for Allergies & Skin Health

If your pet suffers from chronic allergies, you know the cycle: the constant scratching, the red, inflamed skin, and the recurring ear infections.

Managing allergies in dogs and cats can be one of the most frustrating and expensive parts of pet ownership. Traditional treatments like daily pills, expensive monthly injections, or strict diets often only mask the symptoms and can lose their efficacy over time.

At Two Rivers Veterinary Hospital, we offer a different approach. Through our partnership with Ardent Animal Health, we use your pet’s own regenerative cells to "re-program" their overactive immune response, targeting the root cause of the allergy rather than just the itch.

The Science: How It Works

Regenerative cells (specifically Mesenchymal Stem Cells) are nature's most powerful anti-inflammatories. When introduced into an allergic pet, they:

  1. Reduce IgE Levels: These are the allergy antibodies responsible for the reaction.

  2. Calm the Itch Signal: Studies show stem cells reduce the release of cytokines like IL-31, the primary trigger for scratching in dogs.

  3. Repair the Skin Barrier: They help heal micro- and macroscopic damage to the skin, making it harder for environmental allergens to penetrate the skin in the future.

A Three-Injection Series

For pets with moderate to severe allergies—especially those who have stopped responding to standard medications—we often recommend a protocol of three intravenous (IV) stem cell injections, spaced one month apart.

  • Why Three? This loading series allows the regenerative cells to effectively modulate the immune system, shifting it away from an allergic state and toward a state of tolerance.

  • Lasting Relief: While every pet is different, patients typically experience multiple months to even years of relief following this initial series. Some pets may never need a second series, while others may only require a single maintenance injection once every year or two.

  • Drug-Free Comfort: Our goal is to reduce or (hopefully!) completely eliminate your pet's dependence on daily pills or monthly injections while maintaining their comfort and quality of life.

Evidence-Based Results

We don't just rely on anecdotes; we rely on peer-reviewed science. Research consistently supports the use of stem cells for refractory (difficult to treat) skin conditions:

  • A study of dogs not responding to conventional therapy found that a single dose of stem cells led to a significant decrease in itching and skin lesions that remained stable for six months (PubMed, 2018).

  • Research published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science (2023) demonstrated that stem cells rebalance the immune system, increasing the number of regulatory T-cells that prevent allergic flare-ups.

  • In cats with severe inflammatory conditions, a series of 3 injections resulted in lasting clinical improvement for up to 2 years without the need for further medication (PMC, 2026).
