Underwater Treadmill:

Hydrotherapy for Your Dog Friend

At Two Rivers Veterinary Hospital, our underwater treadmill therapy—also known as canine hydrotherapy—offers dogs a safe, low‑impact way to strengthen muscles, ease joint pain, and improve mobility. This specialized modality of canine rehabilitation uses the natural properties of warm water and gentle treadmill movement to support your dog’s health and recovery.

What Is an Underwater Treadmill?

An underwater treadmill is a controlled aquatic environment that allows your dog to walk or trot while partially supported by water. The buoyancy reduces stress on joints and bones, while the water’s resistance builds strength and stamina without hard impact. Sessions are customized for each dog’s condition, comfort level, and goals—whether it’s recovering from surgery, managing arthritis, or staying fit through the winter.

Helping Nervous Dogs Feel Comfortable

Not every pup is sure about water at first—and that’s okay! Our rehabilitation team takes special care to make each dog’s introduction to the underwater treadmill positive and relaxed. Owners are encouraged to participate: you’re welcome to bring your dog’s favorite treats (and we recommend your pup comes a little hungry for extra motivation!). We use patience, gentle encouragement, and positive reinforcement to build confidence and make the experience fun. Usually by the second or third session, dogs arrive ready to hop on in!

Benefits of Underwater Treadmill Therapy

Hydrotherapy offers multiple therapeutic benefits for dogs of all ages and activity levels:

  • Reduced joint stress: The buoyancy of the water lightens your dog’s weight load, making movement easier and more comfortable for sore or healing joints.

  • Improved circulation & reduced swelling: The hydrostatic pressure of the water supports blood flow and helps minimize inflammation after injury or surgery.

  • Enhanced muscle strength & flexibility: Water resistance encourages balanced muscle building while improving flexibility and range of motion.

  • Weight management: A gentle but effective workout that supports calorie burn—perfect for dogs needing to shed a few pounds safely.

  • Faster recovery after orthopedic surgery: Gradual, controlled exercise helps rebuild mobility and confidence during post‑surgical rehab.

  • Increased endurance and conditioning: Great for sporting and working dogs preparing for demanding seasons, like hunting or agility training.

Who Can Benefit?

Your dog doesn’t have to be in our formal rehab program to benefit from the underwater treadmill. Many families use it as:

  • A safe, indoor exercise option during the winter

  • A fitness tool for dogs needing to lose weight

  • A conditioning program to prepare athletic dogs before hunting or competition season

Whether your goal is rehabilitation, fitness, or simply giving your dog a healthy outlet for movement, the underwater treadmill is a versatile and enjoyable way to keep your dog active year‑round.
